ESC Fact Sheet Released!

Here at CSN we’ve been hard at work developing fact sheets for each of the approved urban BMPs in the Bay watershed. These ‘fact sheets’ are based on the recommendations from the expert panel reports but have been pared down to include “just the facts”. In addition, we’ve included some smart tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years for implementing a particular BMP or restoration approach. Most of the time, ESC practices are automatically implemented on construction sites in order to meet state regulations and MS4 requirements. That said, there are a number of “enhanced” techniques that a jurisdiction can utilize in order to further reduce the impact of construction site activities on their local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. Finally, in 2017 the nutrient credit for erosion and sediment control practices is due to expire.

Come again? Not to worry, most jurisdictions have relatively few acres that are under construction each year, but accordingly to the expert panel’s recommendations, nutrient credits for ESC will disappear in 2017. That will mean that local jurisdictions will either need to further compensate for the additional loads by other restoration techniques (retrofitting, stream restoration etc) OR move toward using the enhanced Level 3 techniques outlined in the Expert Panel report.
