Project Description

Captain Trash Wheel plays a pivotal role in promoting sustainability and clean waterways in South Baltimore. Captain is a member of Baltimore City’s family of Trash Wheels and was installed at Masonville Cove in June 2019 and integrated into Maryland Port Administration’s (MPA) environmental education programs by September 2020. Captain has been instrumental in supporting plastic reduction efforts, providing real-time pollution data that aided in the successful implementation of bans on styrofoam, plastic bags, and the proposed plastic bottle ban.

Located at the outfall of the Baybrook Stream’s municipal separate storm sewer system, Captain intercepts and filters stormwater runoff, preserving the quality of the waterfront at Masonville Cove.

Captain has also energized over 20,000 local students and community members through outreach and education programs, tours, and shoreline cleanup participation. These initiatives have fostered a sense of environmental stewardship among participants, making Captain a cornerstone of MPA’s educational outreach. The knowledge and experience gained from these programs have empowered community members to take active roles in sustainability efforts, leading to cleaner neighborhoods and increased awareness of environmental issues. The engagement has been crucial in protecting the local Greater
Baybrook watershed and wildlife, with returning species like birds, waterfowl, and river otters benefiting from a cleaner environment.

With its big personality, googly eyes, and stage presence in Masonville Cove and on social media, Captain goes above and beyond by serving as a local icon and stormwater pollution awareness ambassador, inspiring thousands of students and community members. Its innovative use of hydro and solar power to remove pollutants from the waterway and its role in community education make it a model for other stormwater professionals seeking to replicate its success.
